# Ending a connection

The client may send the server an optional [Logout `<5>`](/trading/fix/overview/session-level-messages/logout) message but the exchange will not interpret its absence as being an abnormal condition.

Under certain conditions, the server may send the client a [Logout `<5>`](/trading/fix/overview/session-level-messages/logout) message where the [Text `<58>`](https://www.onixs.biz/fix-dictionary/4.4/tagNum_58.html) field contains the reason, such as scheduled maintenance.
